Peloponnese boasts an inexhaustible wealth of fruit, garden produce and nuts. Each season, nature’s workshop, assisted by experienced growers, offers man unique gifts. Lotus fruit and pomegranates, citrus fruit and apples, summer melons and water-melons, walnuts, almonds and gardens in full bloom, all go to create the Peloponnesian feast.
Peloponnese holds a leading position in the sector of organic farming. More and more growers are certifying their products, by using natural fertilizers and insecticides.
Peloponnesian products are held in high esteem, both in the Greek and global market. Producers’ dedication and skill, together with the coordinated efforts of local and national institutions managing and promoting agricultural products, have helped to acquaint the public with these unique, primitive, local products.
These are certified quality products which are included in the Coffin of the Peloponnesian Products· products that consist an indispensable part of our lives, of our culture, of our long living secret.

Fruits and Vegetables

The mountainous sultanina vineyards in Corinthia are flecked with gold from the sun’s rays. The grape produced from this wonderful variety is exported to many countries. The golden grapes, when dried, acquire honey-coloured hues. The Corinthian sultanina is a product with exceptional organoleptic properties and a worldwide reputation. Peloponnesian citrus fruits, lemons, oranges and mandarins, have conquered markets mainly in Europe and the East. With their high content of Vitamin C, they shield the human body from numerous ailments. Yet, apart from being beneficial, they are extremely enjoyable, full of aroma and flavour. Kalamata’s figs are world renowned for their quality. They are only grown in the area around Kalamata and in Laconia and are almost all exported. The characteristic rings of dried figs provide a note of summer in the depths of winter.
The Messinian water-melon is an early fruit of exceptional quality. It is produced using unique cultivation practices, which make it the earliest water-melon in Europe. Production is almost entirely exported and has won distinctions, given that it incorporates environmentally-friendly care. The ancient name of the water-melon was giant hydropepon. Its delicious, bright-red flesh, with its sugary ‘heart’ and plentiful, cool juice is the trademark of the Greek summer.

Peloponnesian citrus fruits are well-known for their quality. Lemon, orange and mandarin trees provide natural decoration for the Peloponnesian land. The exquisite fruits shine on the trees like a thousand suns, creating landscapes of exceptional beauty. Lemons, oranges, mandarins, along with bitter oranges, bergamots and grapefruits, are a true ally for human health. They are an excellent source of vitamin C and antioxidants. They help in detoxifying the body and controlling weight. They also provide delicious juices, for which Peloponnese is famous. The beneficial properties of citrus fruits in revitalizing the body are concentrated in the superb essential oils, which are used in cosmetology and alternative medicine.
Garden produce from Peloponnese is held in high esteem by consumers. Its land is ranked as the second centre for greenhouse crops in Greece, after Crete. The main crops are tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers. These top-quality products, certified and completely safe, are supplied to both domestic and foreign markets. Also well-known for their quality and earthy, full flavour, are potatoes from Arcadia and Messinia. A considerable amount is exported and the sector is constantly developing.

Peloponnese holds a leading position in the sector of organic farming. More and more growers are certifying their products, by using natural fertilizers and insecticides. Viticulture and olive-growing in Peloponnese aim at being included in organic farming, as do all the other sectors, creating a true paradise of purity and profusion.
Peloponnesian herbs are a true treasure. On its lofty mountains, like Taygetus, aromatic greens and herbs with incomparable properties flourish. St John’s Wort, bay laurel, thyme, mountain tea, rosemary, oregano, sage, chamomile and many more plants, wild and cultivated, compose the enchanting world of Peloponnesian aromas. Their use in cooking and confectionary excite the sense of enjoyment, and at the same time provide the human body with weapons to protect its health.
